Here’s a concise comparison between the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

  1. Purpose:

    • IELTS: Primarily used for immigration, work, and study purposes.

    • TOEFL: Commonly required for admission to English-speaking universities and colleges.

  2. Format:

    • IELTS: Consists of four sections—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking test is face-to-face.

    • TOEFL: Includes four sections—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. All sections are computer-based.

  3. Scoring:

    • IELTS: Scores range from 0 to 9, with half-point increments. Overall band score is an average of the four sections.

    • TOEFL: Scores range from 0 to 120. Each section is scored separately, and the total is calculated.

  4. Content:

    • IELTS: Uses a variety of accents in Listening and focuses on real-life situations in Reading and Writing.

    • TOEFL: Academic content with North American accents in Listening. Reading passages are from textbooks and academic articles.

  5. Speaking:

    • IELTS: Face-to-face interview with an examiner.

    • TOEFL: Recorded responses to prompts.
